Candidates for the position of Trenton Police Officer must first apply to the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and pass an entrance examination in order to be placed on a list of eligible candidates. The Civil Service Commission periodically posts announcements for Municipal Police Officer examinations. Once the announcement is posted, you must apply prior to the filing date and pay any applicable fees. You will then be instructed on when and where to appear to take the examination. After you have taken the examination, you will be contacted by the Civil Service Commission by mail with your results. When the Trenton Police Department is ready to hire new officers, we request a certified list of eligible candidates from the test. We then use that list to inform candidates when and where they are to appear for processing to begin the background investigation process. •

Candidates then undergo an intensive background investigation to determine if they are appropriate for the position of Trenton Police Officer. Those who make it through the background investigation process will be give a conditional offer of employment and scheduled for a Psychological Examination and a PreEmployment Medical Examination to determine if you are fit to become a Trenton Police Officer. Candidates who are chosen to become Trenton Police Recruits are then required to attend the Mercer County Police Academy. At the academy, recruits will be educated in subjects such as: statutory law, motor vehicle law, report writing, interview and interrogation techniques and domestic violence. Recruits will also be required to undergo hands-on training in subjects such as: physical training, defensive tactics, emergency driving and firearms. Students will then be tested on all subjects and must acquire a passing score in order to graduate. After successful completion of the Mercer County Police Academy, recruits will be formally sworn in as Trenton Police Officers and assigned to a Field Training Officer. New officers will then work with an experienced officer for the start of their career as a Trenton Police Officer.
